The Ecosystem of You
By Jaime Allen
Well, you've decided that this is the year that you are going to make some improvements in your life, and to make yourself look and feel better. Where are you going to start? What will your approach be? Depending on your personal situation, there may be some areas that rise to the top of the list. This can cause you to forget about the fundamentals. For many people there are a series of inter-related things, that if worked on as part of a planned program could make some amazing changes. The difficulty is that often "we can't see the forest through the trees". We are blinded by a few ideas we have in our head, and can't step back far enough to consider other elements that might be very important. To illustrate what I mean here, let's relate this topic to something entirely different. Consider a country garden. Tending to a garden can be done using a variety of techniques. Aerating, adding fertilizer, watering, adding plants, landscaping can all have a variety of influences. Often people start a garden with lots of enthusiasm, and over a few years, they may have less time to spend on that garden. By careful planning, a garden can remain beautiful even after you are no longer able to dedicate intensive amounts of time to it. Consider "Sally" who starts her garden by bringing in manure, aerating the soil, purchasing colorful annuals to plant, and working diligently to seed the garden. "Jane" takes a different approach. She researches the area she lives in, finds plants that are well suited to thrive in that area, plants that can be complimentary to one another to reduce the amount of weeding and fertilizer that are needed. These plants develop deep root systems that require less aerating as well as reducing the need to water and irrigate the area. Both approaches are valid, but consider which has the greater probability of long term success. Sally's choice will likely be high maintenance, while Jane will probably be able to relax and enjoy her garden a bit more. Both can be enjoyable and successful endeavours, but a different level of committment might be required for each. The same thoughts can be applied to a beauty regimen. If your plan is to focus on the appearance of your face (wrinkles, tone, etc...), you have many options to help you. There are tons of products, concealers, foundation, blush, chemical masks - and this can get complex indeed. Many of these skin care approaches take significant amounts of time, multiple steps and multiple products. Like Sally's garden, this will require extensive expense and maintenance. Many of these tasks will be outside the range of things you might naturally do. Now consider an approach that starts with more fundamental elements. We know that if you are healthier, you will tend to look better. Wait! - don't start a heavy workout program and go on a crash diet, consider some subtle changes, small steps that will actually become part of how you live day to day. Why not exercise by getting off the bus one stop early and walking a few times a week (easy and natural). Why not add some good food choices in place of some previously bad choices - small changes applied consistently will make a positive and lasting impact. There are some areas you just can't get away from. To have clear good looking skin, some products are important. A cleanser for example. A sunscreen (critical), and even a face and eye wrinkle cream to help restore the health of your skin. Did you catch that? The cream is not to provide a magic solution or an influx of special ingredients to replace what your body should produce naturally, but rather to help your skin achieve a healthy eco-system allowing it to provide for itself. There are examples of this where products use animal by-products (from birds, cows, pigs) to produce a substitute for what your body should make. Collagen is the typical example. Why not consider finding products that can improve the way the cells function to absorb anti-oxidants and produce their own collagen, rather than seeking a short-term quick fix solution? This is like Sally adding a ton of fertilizer, compared to Jane trying to work with the ecosystem to produce changes from within. Consider where else examples like this might apply to your personal life, grooming, health, overall happiness. You'll be surprised how many ideas you can come up with. |

Wow. What an awesome article. I am neither "Sally" nor "Jane" but "Emma" who has a mass of overgrown weeds and bushland where her garden used to be. I've tried to be more like Sally but always failed. I shall now try to be like Jane. Thank you for (possibly) changing my life.
